Logan Elementary "Oopsie!"

By Kelly Hessedal (News Channel 8)

MOLINE - Students at Logan Elementary in Moline looked through their new student handbook and got an eye-opening education in what not to say in class.

Printed inside is a list of derogatory comments and swear words that would make even most adults blush.

"I can't believe I didn't see it, I looked through it," said Annika Jacobs. Her son is a third grader at Logan.

"This page should be ripped out," said David Glasgow. His two boys are fifth and sixth graders at the school. They bought their copies last week.

"It should've never been put in the book," he said.

A spokesperson for the Moline School District says it was an accident. The words were printed under a section titled "Inappropriate Behaviors." The list was never meant for students to see. Teachers put together the list during an annual seminar on positive behavior intervention. The teacher's version made it to print by mistake.

"Honest mistakes happen, but this shouldn't have happened," said parent Gail Tapia. Her son, Cameron, is entering first grade. She's relieved he didn't see the list.

"He would try and pronounce everything and ask what it means, I'd have to explain it," she said.

"I guess it gives them a good idea of what not to say," said Jacobs. She hopes to teach her 3rd grader Dakota when the time is right.

"He's going to grow up - see these things, I'll have to explain it," he said.

A spokesperson for the district says it only received complaints from a couple parents. It is taking steps to fix the problem. It stopped distributing the current versions of the books with the list - it's also recalling all of those handbooks already passed out.
